Wisdom Tooth Extractions in Burwood

Teen girl smilingWisdom teeth, also known as the third molars, are the last teeth to push through the gums. They usually erupt from the gums between the ages of 17-24. Some wisdom teeth don’t come through fully and get stuck, causing other teeth to move and become difficult to clean. In some cases, the tooth may lean against another tooth, causing pain. Having your wisdom teeth removed is something nearly everyone has to deal with.

The most common reasons for wisdom teeth extractions are pain or crowding of the teeth due to a lack of room. Many problems with wisdom teeth are found during a routine check-up. X-rays are taken to determine how close the tooth is to the nerve, its position in the bone, and the position of the roots. That will determine whether the extraction can be done in our practice or whether you will need to see a different dental professional.

If there are no complicating factors, your dentist will perform the extraction in the practice as normal. If the wisdom teeth are impacted, your gums are infected from the eruption of the tooth, or other complications, an oral surgeon may be necessary.

Issues With Wisdom Teeth

If you experience any of these issues, we recommend you come to the practice to see if the wisdom teeth might need to be removed.

  • Pain
  • Gum disease
  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • Decay (of the wisdom tooth or neighbouring teeth)
  • Ulcers or cysts
  • Excessive growth or crowding
  • Difficulty opening and closing the mouth (trismus)

We don’t recommend wisdom teeth extractions unless you experience repeated infections or pain in their head or jaw. If the tooth is inaccessible for a filling to be placed, or erupting in the wrong place, extraction is necessary. There’s no point in keeping them if they’re decayed or giving you trouble.

What to Expect

When you arrive, you’ll receive a consent form to sign, which includes all the information about the process, possible complications, what to expect, etc. Most upper wisdom teeth are easily removed under local anaesthetic. Lower wisdom teeth can be more difficult to remove. In some cases, removing your wisdom tooth may involve a different dental professional’s care to cut the gum to uncover your tooth, remove bone around the tooth, or divide your tooth with a drill.

At Burwood Dental Centre, our years of experience help you feel comfortable and relaxed in the dentist’s chair before performing any procedures. Our dentists are skilled at removing wisdom teeth and providing you with the best results.
